Opportunities for students

Both majors and minors in English are encouraged to participate in the Undergraduate English Club, the Salmon Creek Journal literary magazine, and the internship and tutoring experiences available though the WSU Vancouver Writing Center and the Program in Technical and Professional Writing.

Internships

Professional Writing and American Studies internships provide opportunities to complement your knowledge of theories and practices learned during coursework with real-world application with local businesses and organizations. Past interns have been hosted by such organizations as the following:

  • Clark County Historical Museum
  • Clark Public Utilities
  • The Columbian newspaper
  • LaCamas Life Magazine
  • Lelooska Foundation (Native living history program and museum)
  • Oregon Zoo
  • Oregon Public Broadcasting
  • Washington State Legislature
  • WSU Vancouver Writing Center

Independent Study

With the permission of a faculty member, you can register for an independent study course on a topic not covered by regular courses offered. Talk to your advisor if you are interested in independent study in such topics as film, creative writing or teaching apprenticeship.
