CAS Advising

What can your academic advisor help you with?

Track your progress towards graduation

Your College of Arts and Sciences Advising Center (CASAC) advisor will work with you each semester to determine your remaining graduation requirements and what courses and action you can take to fulfill those requirements.

Matching goals to classes

There is more to choosing the right classes than just meeting graduation requirements. You and your advisor will work together to find classes that spark your imagination and develop skills you will need to meet your post-graduation goals.

Discover opportunities

In addition to the knowledge you gain in your classes, CASAC advisors can connect you to a wide range of learning experiences including study abroad opportunities, internships, volunteer opportunities, and undergraduate research participation.

Find resources

Your advisor can find resources that will promote your academic success like the Writing Center, the Math and Science Skills Center, and tutoring.

Connect with the WSU Vancouver campus

A successful university experience requires making connections. Ask your advisor about how to get involved in clubs, student government, and a variety of on-campus and off-campus student activities.

Choose a minor

A minor is a great way to either supplement the experience gained in you chosen major, or simply broaden your career opportunities. Your CASAC advisor will explain the advantages and requirements of different minors.

Navigate the paperwork

Whether you are certifying in a major, changing majors, signing up for an internship, dropping a class, or applying for graduation, applications, petitions, registration forms, and a complex set of policies and requirements are all unavoidable parts of the college experience. Your advisor can help guide you through these processes and even process much of your paperwork for you, allowing you to focus your time and energy on coursework instead of paperwork.

Plan for graduate school

A graduate school application reflects the decisions you made as an undergrad. Your CASAC advisor can help you choose classes and activities that that will address the requirements and preferences of the graduate programs of your choice, as well as support you through the application process.

Success

Your success at WSU Vancouver will be measured in a variety of areas. The knowledge and experiences you acquire, the grades you earn, the connections you make, and the careers you find after graduation will all determine how you and others evaluate the value of your time at WSU Vancouver. Your CASAC advisor’s goal is to encourage you to discover your ability to excel in each of these areas.

Contacting your advisor

CASAC is located on the north side of campus on the main floor of the Vancouver Sciences and Engineering Building (VSCI).

All of the advisors in the Center have a large number of advisees, so they typically meet with students by appointment only. Appointments should be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance, and you should plan an hour for your appointment unless told otherwise.

You are always welcome to contact your advisor via email or phone, and some advisors also offer drop-in hours each week to address questions that can be answered quickly.
